Piano Lessons in Park Slope, Brooklyn
What Lessons Are Like
Personally Tailored
Young children learn through playful, fun music activities, adapted to each child’s temperament and learning style.

For older beginners and intermediate to advanced students, lessons are shaped around each person’s tastes and goals. The pace can be moderate or more ambitious, with focus areas such as classical repertoire, jazz & improvisation, song accompaniment, or a combination of all.

Across all ages, I work to create an atmosphere that feels relaxed, focused, and encouraging.
Interesting, Enjoyable Music
The repertoire needs to be interesting – we should always play good music!

Simple melodies are good enough at the beginning, and as we progress we move into music that’s richer and more rewarding to play. The selection can (and should) be of a wide variety of genres: classical music, contemporary pop songs, jazz, rock, classic Disney tunes, and more. Students choose from recommended repertoire and are encouraged to add their own ideas.
Reading Music & Musical Foundations
Music reading is introduced from the beginning and remains central as students progress, alongside essential concepts in rhythm, harmony, interpretation, and technique.
Learning By Ear & Imitation
We learn to speak before we learn to read and write. Similarly, most early students can play more advanced music than they can read. Therefore, we learn music not only from the page, but also by ear and imitation — so that the ability to play can grow naturally in parallel with the ability to read.
Improvisation — Learning to Speak Music
Music is a language — and we should be able to “speak it” naturally, spontaneously, and fluently. Students are encouraged to try new musical ideas freely and are taught improvisation skills.
Intermediate to advanced students may choose to focus more intensively on jazz improvisation or contemporary pop skills.
Composition, Songwriting, Theory
Students can enrich their musical experience through creative work — composing, writing songs, and deepening their understanding of theory.
